Welcome to my blog!!
I think that I need to begin with a bit of background about the project for those readers who are not familiar with what we have been up to. As a fourth year radio journalism class we were given the challenge of engaging in participatory production projects in the local community of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Our projects were to be about getting members of the community involved in producing their own radio work and specifically we were interested in learning about the social experience of age and how age affects your lived experience at various times in your life. Three groups of fourth year students each tackled a different age group and got involved in participatory journalism with the citizens in our community.
My group consists of myself, Paula Gilbert, and my two colleagues and fellow radio students Marc da Motta and Michael Bratt. We were enlisted to get involved in a project with the primary school students at Good Shepherd School in Grahamstown. We began a project with the grade 4-7 learners and ended up choosing a group of 6 bright children ranging between the age of 10 and 12 to produce audio work with us. The project began in May 2009 as we underwent three weeks of research, running workshops with the learners that taught them about radio and doing various activities with them. We are now in our final three weeks of the project where we are heading towards the final production of a half hour magazine radio show and a Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign. The idea is for the children to produce their own radio show and PSA campaign, with our help, and in doing so to activate them as citizen journalists. I will be blogging weekly about the process so the first blog will come shortly
Enjoy
